Protecting Your Landscaping from Freezing

Freezing temperatures can pose a significant threat to your beautiful Baton Rouge landscape. Our expert tips and strategies will help you safeguard your plants, trees, and lawn from harsh winter weather. Learn how to prepare your outdoor space, utilize protective coverings, and implement winter care techniques to ensure your landscape remains vibrant and healthy throughout the colder months in Louisiana.

Plants

Cover any tropical plants, palm trees, etc with cloth-type fabric.  Anchor cloth fabric covering with stakes or heavy stones.  Water roots heavily. Plants/trees can be trimmed down if this makes covering easier. Consider installing heat light beneath sensitive plantings.

Examples of Tropicals

  • Bottlebrush
  • Bird of Paradise
  • Helinconia
  • Hibiscus
  • Succulents
  • Palms (delicate palms such as queen palms, majesty, Sylvester.  Cabbage/Sabal and Mule Palms hardy. No need to protect)
  • Purple Fountain Grass
  • Oleander
  • Bouganivillea
  • Mandevilla
  • Citrus Trees
  • Viburnum

(some plants may tip burn dependent upon how low temperatures drop and how long under 32 degrees)
